Further Evidences of Anomuran Non - pedunculate Spermatophores

چکیده
MACRURAN NON-PEDUNCULATE SPERMATOPHORES were differentiated from anomuran pedunculate spermatophores by CaIman (1909), but subsequent studies embracing both macrura of the Palinuridae, Scyllaridae, and Nephropsidae (Matthews, 1951, 1954b, 1954c) and the anomura of the Paguridae (Mouchet, 1931; Matthews, 1953, 1956), placed this differentiation in doubt. However, not until it was discovered that a macruran, Parribacus antarcticus, elaborated pedunculate spermatophores (Matthews, 1954a) and an anomuran, Hippa pacifica, elaborated nonpedunculate spermatophores (Matthews, 1956) was the dichotomy between these two tribes proven to be untenable. This paper, which compares the development of Aniculus maximus spermatophores with that of certain other Paguridae, records still other instances in which anomuran nonpedunculate spermatophores are produced.

Studies of male sexual tubes in hermit crabs (crustacea, decapoda, anomura, paguroidea). I. Morphology of the sexual tube in Micropagurus acantholepis (Stimpson, 1858), with comments on function and evolution.
The external morphology and internal structure of the male sexual tube of the hermit crab Micropagurus acantholepis, a member of the family Paguridae from Australian waters, is described in detail using histological thick sectioning and scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques. This is the first in-depth study of a sexual tube in the Paguroidea, a group where a remarkable number...
متن کاملExtreme Costs of Mating for Male Two-Spot Ladybird Beetles
Male costs of mating are now thought to be widespread. The two-spot ladybird beetle (Adalia bipunctata) has been the focus of many studies of mating and sexual selection, yet the costs of mating for males are unknown. The mating system of A. bipunctata involves a spermatophore nuptial gift ingested by females after copulation. In this study, we investigate the cost to males of mating and of tra...

The tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a polyandrous species of economic importance on the American continent. This sexual behavior allows for the presence of multiple spermatophores inside a female and the possibility of different males fertilizing the femaleÕs offspring, which can make insecticide resistance management or sterile insect release programs par...
متن کاملAdaptive evolution of sexual systems in pedunculate barnacles.
How and why diverse sexual systems evolve are fascinating evolutionary questions, but few empirical studies have dealt with these questions in animals. Pedunculate (gooseneck) barnacles show such diversity, including simultaneous hermaphroditism, coexistence of dwarf males and hermaphrodites (androdioecy), and coexistence of dwarf males and females (dioecy). Here, we report the first phylogenet...
متن کاملGetting under the skin: autonomous implantation of squid spermatophores.
Squid spermatophores are complex structures that store sperm and, when transferred to the female, evert into spermatangia. Some deep-sea squid implant spermatangia into unmodified tissue of the female. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain this peculiar implantation process. Here, through on board observation of freshly caught deep-sea squid (Moroteuthis ingens), we show for the firs...
